 hello there,

i have couple of questions and was hoping i can get some help. I am a big fan of Adobe Illustrator and would like to create my own graphics for my apps. I am planning on saving my graphics as a png files and i am having hard time finding out (on the internet) what are the standards...in other words: what is the standard resolution and size for graphics used on sell phone apps?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Stani

Stani,

Usually when I make my own apps I try to make my images 1000px in width and then set 100% width for the picture in HTML if the picture if for a header and such. But it all really depends on what the picture is for. If you're making your own icons, they can be 258x258 and will be fine.

Here's an example of the 100% width in HTML that I've used.

<img src="headerimage.PNG" width="100%">

What would be an ideal image size for page background images?

I hardly ever use background images so I would have to test this a bit. Let me do some test cases and I'll try to get back to you this weekend or Monday on this.

Tony, Typically the best image size for page background images is 640 x 960.

You'll want to go to your app's "Design Properties" on your apps main menu to select that image as your background.

You can also individual edit the backgrounds for each individual pages or make it so that they don't display a background at all by selecting a background color for that page. To do this you need to be in your App's main menu, click on Edit Pages, find the page you want to edit and click on "Style" instead of "Edit".

If we wanted to follow the Android specification and support multiple screen sizes, looks like we would need to be able to edit or add to the manifest.  Is there a way for us to do that?   Wishful thinking I know.

The app builder automatically will resize the background to fit to these screens so this is not needed, or from my experience it has worked this way.

I will give 640 x 960 a try for custom backgrounds.  I tried the 1000px @ 100% for a couple of images and that seemed to work pretty good for a header image.

Just so you know, getting the background image to work like the header image might be a little difference regarding using the 100% width codes. But that's why we test and test some more until we get the results that we want. Try addition the background image first in the Design Properties section to see if that works for you.
